MLM Strategies For Network Marketing

Recently I sat through a Pre-Paid Legal presentation at my hospice services workplace. As I listened, I was reminded of all of the many multilevel marketing or MLM presentations I have endured over my 30 years of pastoring local churches.

Those mlm opportunity sessions have covered the gamut of products. Usually they were high pressure events that for the most part used what I considered deceptive mlm strategies to get people to attend and then to join up in what is usually referred to as a mlm downline.

Included was a scenario on how to build your downline (sales people you sponsored), that if followed, would have everyone in the world signing up under you in 3 or 4 months (or so their faulty math suggested).

What I noticed about most MLM'ers was that they were so locked into pushing their product line onto everyone else in the church that they actually drove people away. For the most part they were just endured.

If I were to join a network marketing opportunity or submit to what you are being told is a surefire mlm opportunity, I would certainly read a recently release MLM book entitled The Renegade Network Marketer.

Had those in my congregations used the suggested mlm strategies, I believe they would have been far more effective network marketers, turning people on to their products rather than turning people off, not only to the mlm product they were pushing, but to the entire concept of mlm, thus becoming more effective multilevel marketers.

Three Possible Solutions: Mortgage Foreclosure, Refinance Mortgage, or Short Sale

Southern California is seeing more homeowners facing foreclosure in these uncertain financial times. Truth is many of us cannot make our mortgage payments.

The challenge for most of us is readjustment of the 100% Adjustable Rate Mortgages we took out to buy our homes in the last few years.

For many of us, out payments have adjusted up and the value of our homes has gone down.

So now what. Yes, we have tried to refinance and are on our 5th lender. The challenge is loan to value of the home. A friend of mine says that there are 7 or 8 empty houses on his street alone where people just walked away. His house, just 2 or 3 years old, is valued at $100,000 less than what is owing on an adjustable rate mortgage, now up to over 11% interest rate and soon to adjust again.

The impact on careers is phenomenal. The mortgage industry has experienced major layoffs, with some mortgage companies going under. Some of the mortgage brokers we dealt with are no longer with the lender they worked for.

The only thing saving our building trade industry is the construction jobs after the wild fires we experienced in San Diego.

So back to the mortgage strategy challenge. What option do we choose -- Mortgage Foreclosure, Refinance Mortgage, or Short Sale.

Pastor Appreciation Gift Ideas are often sought after since October is Pastor Appreciation Month.

I have to admit that my motivation was to help churches honor their pastor, since one of the key factors in pastors leaving the ministry is often feeling unappreciated.

Some meaningful pastor appreciation gifts give to me and my family have been family vacations, bed and breakfast lodging, and maybe someday, a family cruise.

I guess it happens to lots of blogging type folks --becoming brainblog dead. Not sure why this happens but happen it does.

Nothing to do with available material to write. Just look at the stuff on your computer hard drive. If that is not enough, check out your inbox on your email program.

So if it isn't lack of material, what could it be that ties up the brain cells and blocks the free flow of ideas? After all, most blogging is just personal opinion.

Mental and Motivational Burnout

Just like when Career Burnout takes place, ones motivational juices stop flowing. Many experience compassion fatigue in careers in social work, counseling careers, and even ministry careers. So it seems to me passion fatigue could take place as well.

Of course, if one has passion for faith, or for writing, or for a career, can you call it passion if it wains somewhere along the journey? All the more reason to monitor one's passions. We only have so much energy.

Let's face it -- our capacity to juggle the many interests of life is a factor too. I for one take on too many projects at a time. Add to that the fact that I usually end up making my endeavors far more complicated than they need to be. Remember the KISS principle? (Keep It Simple, Stupid).

Simplicity Easier Than I Realize

When it comes to writing, website themes, and even changing careers, the key is to address whatever is on our plates at the moment. The key for me is to be an idea broker addressing the problems of life common to many.

What am I facing that is common to the human family? I can think of several problems needing a solution:

A need to lose weight,
facing the mortgage refinance dilemma,
preparing for retirement,
how to earn extra income.

In talking to those I work with who have chosen a Social Work Career, the conversation today was on how long my social work co-workers will work in their career as social workers.

"I want to be in the field of social work the rest of my life" was the consensus of the medical social workers I share an office with. Notice the reference to the field of social work, because there is a very large social work arena with hundreds of social work opportunities for the enterprising social worker.

I share my career change story here, telling how to become a chaplain, describe chaplain training requirements, why I became a chaplain, what prompted me to consider a chaplain career, in fact, I share just about anything related to chaplaincy.

On this page I share how in late October of 2000, a man who had pastored with me a number of years previously in Western Washington, challenged me to consider how to become a chaplain.

I admit that we were both victims of pastor burnout, saying that "neither of us used that term (pastor burnout) nor did we see the positives in negative pastoral problems."

Chaplain Certification Process To Become A Professional Chaplain: "General Standards for Chaplain Certification

I recently received a email asking for me to help chaplains become certified for the US Customs Department. I am not sure the person ask for me to supply chaplain certification services understands what the chaplain certification requirements are.

Even this list of chaplain employment standards need to be updated I am sure, but for now they will help guide my conversation with the customs agent who contacted me.

1. Understand that this certification is post-graduate program, meaning it is beyond a master's level degree, which means a Bachelor’s Degree plus a theological education at the graduate professional level.

2. Chaplain certification requires clinical hours involving on the job training, meaning job training in a clinical setting. The required clinical education for chaplaincy certification is four (4) units (1600 hours) of Clinical Pastoral Education.

3. Certification for chaplains requires you to prove yourself by securing chaplain employment.

4. Chaplain certification requires the candidate to be recognized as one in a God-called pastoral role.

5. Certification for chaplaincy requires a sponsoring church or ministry group to approve the candidate as one of their own. This Ecclesiastical Endorsement by a recognized faith group for ministry in a specialized setting, must be done before applying to the APC.

6. Chaplain certification requires supportive evidence of good character: Three recommendation letters are required and one of the letters from a certified chaplain.

7. Certification requires the candidate to show documentation of his or her work, detailed "verbatims" describing the pastoral intervention to demonstrate one's current level of professional chaplain proficiency.

8: Chaplain certification requires the candidate to be authentic and transparent by telling their own personal story by submitting an autobiographical sketch which describes how your family, spiritual journey, and life history have influenced your vocational choices, goals and practice of ministry.

When met, these requirements for chaplain certification, through a recognized association of professional chaplain organization, qualifies the candidate for chaplain employment.

I recently discovered another great aspect about blogging -- I had a copy of a website page that I could easily access when I accidentily wrote over the original page on my website.

Somehow -- well that is not true, I know exactly how -- I changed the name of the original page by renaming a blog on my site. But thankfully I remembered I had written a blog about the original creation process and was able to re-create the website content, close enought to the original.

The article I recently wrote entitled High Speed Internet My Area explores that absolute need that internet junkies have for faster internet access. Did I say need? OK, want.

Continuing Education Requirements For Professional Chaplains

On my website, Change Careers With Purpose I address the issue of continuing education requirements needed in most professional careers.

When considering a change of careers, most of us expect that minimum educational requirements must be met before being hired. Yet just as important is to understand that most professional employment has continuing education standards to be met.

For example, tomorrow I plan on attending 7th Clinical Team Conference - The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. By doing so I will meet professional chaplain education requirements in my career as a healthcare chaplain.

According to the website announcement, the 7th Clinical Team Conference (CTC) is specifically designed for the hospice/palliative interdisciplinary team, the heart of quality end-of-life care. Several of my co-workers will attend, also meeting continuing ed requirements for their specif disciplines.

These hospice care disciplines include: Physicians, Nurses, Therapist, Administrators, Social Workers, Bereavement Professionals, Spiritual Caregivers, Pharmacist, Volunteers, and other Members of the Interdisciplinary Team.

This hospice focused conference will be a first for me since becoming a Board Certified Chaplain. Fortunately for me, San Diego continuing education opportunities are plentiful for me to meet the Association of Professional Chaplain contining education requirements.

Teaching future preschool teachers

My wife is the director of a university lab preschool, which means that it is literally a laboratory for teaching future preschool teachers. It is also a normal preschool, with 3 year old and 4 year old students.

I'm often accused by my family of making my website at Change Career With Purpose a lab website, using it as a laboratory of family experiments.

Such is the case for three web pages I wrote about buying a used car for our daughter, who recently made her own change career move. Since I was researching stuff about the best deals for buying used cars anyway, why not write up my research as web pages on my website.

I have done so, using a bit of creative writing flair by couching my used car buying advice in the language of a father to daughter talk about dating and relationships.

Good Intentions In Website Creation

My home page has sat long enough in its present form. I know what I need to do but never seem to get to it. So a few weeks ago I shortened the amount of information. I want it to be more of a portal that has fresher content continually.

So I just deleted much of webpage verbage that seemed to clutter my website landscape.

It is still too long. So next I intend to do something more concise with the sitemap structure. I still have over 200 visitors per day, hopefully people who need to change career direction in order to minister more effectively.

My own personal purpose driven career is guided by what I see as my God-given purpose ... helping people be all they can be, by the grace of God.

This article on the chaplain employment process must be prompting potential chaplains to explore a chaplaincy career as a ministry career option. I have received 4 enquiries this week asking for more information concerning how to become a chaplain.

Several who wrote were upset with the requirement for either a master's of divinity degree or having to take 4 units of clinical pastoral education, both needed to meet the basic chaplain career requirements.

Of course my role is not to defend the requirements but to simply share my "change career journey" to chaplaincy.

As you can see, I am passionate about chaplaincy as a viable ministry career.

as did the Rabbi who is a fellow healthcare chaplain, I was honored he shared this greeting with me. In fact, I returned the greeting as did he, saying to me

What Would You Expect If God Really Did Come To Earth?

Mine is a simple faith. I really do believe that God became man. But this is no sentimental belief that is based on a cute story about a Baby. It is so much more than that -- a life related faith in God, who became a man for the redemptive purpose of eternal salvation and resources for facing the trials of life.

Before my change career decision from a parish pastor career to a healthcare chaplain career, I would preach an annual sermon entitled What Would You Expect If God Really Did Come To Earth In Human Form? or a variation of that best loved story of Christ's birth.

If God were to come to earth in human form, you would expect, if it was really God, that He would make a very unusual entrance and come in a most unique and special way. And God did just that, coming as a Baby, born of a virgin, born in a cow stall with a cow crib as his first crib.

If God were to come to earth in human form, you would expect, if it was really God, that His life would be full of the miraculous. And Jesus did just that, healing the crippled, restoring sight to the blind and hearing to the deaf, conquering storms, and even raising the dead back to life again.

If God were to come to earth in human form, you would expect, if it was really God, that He would teach the most amazing life related principles. And Jesus did just that. . .
- speaking such powerful truths that they have endured through the ages,
- teachings that have an eternal and life changing impact.
If God were to come to earth in human form, you would expect, if it was really God, that He would come with the most amazing purpose. And Jesus did just that, coming not just to be a cute baby, but as the Savior of all who put their faith and trust in Him.
- Jesus came to redeem us,
- He came to forgive us our sins, restoring fellowship with God,
- God became man to give us inner resources to face the demands of life,
- Jesus came with the redemptive purpose to give us the gift of eternal life.

There were times I was asked to speak at a Lion's Club luncheon or a Kiwanis Club breakfast during December. Now I am smart enough to know that when a service club asks a pastor to speak during December, they expect to hear a faith related message.

This webpage reveals the top paying professions but the question is whether these high earning professions are also highly purposed professions.

The only way to tell is if we could examine the heart of the individual who has chosen a highly compensated career. Personally, I would want a physician motivated by the desire to save lives and relieve pain, who is purpose driven by more than earning money.

At the same time, I am glad doctors lead the highly compensated professionals list. The last thing I would want is to have my doctor moon-nighting (working an extra job in addition to a regular job). Hmnnnn, that could make it my last wish. . . .

I have had several questions as to how to become a chaplain even though I explain the process clearly on my Change Career With Purpose website. One individual who has written me several times as to the process for being a board certified chaplain (Association of Professional Chaplain certification).

I understand his frustrations with educational requirements for chaplaincy as well as his uncertainty as to what to do next. All I can do is share my story to chaplaincy and hope that he can experience God's leadership for his career as a chaplain.

"A Breakfast That Changed My Life"

Often people ask me how I became a health care chaplain. I tell the story of my change career journey into chaplaincy so that you might understand the chaplain employment process. Mine began with an invitation to have breakfast by a friend of mine. We met at a local Denny's for breakfast.

Our meeting would have huge implications in changing the direction of my career, becoming a "change career, with purpose" encounter.

We chatted for a few minutes catching up on each other's lives. We discovered that we lived 6 blocks from one another! It was in early January 2001 that he called me and said he must talk to me and that it was urgent.

Our meeting would impact my ministry career and would start me thinking about how to become a chaplain, lead me to a life changing chaplain training opportunity, resulting in people addressing me as Chaplain Paul as I began my chaplain career.

While eating breakfast, the following career changing conversation took place between him, my faith challenging friend, and me, the frustrated burned out
pastor:

Faith Challenging Friend: "Paul, I don't think I have ever told anyone this but I believe that God gave me a message to tell you. I have to admit that this is very unusual for me to do. But God has impressed upon me to give you a message and you can decide for yourself if it is from God or if I just had a bad dream."

Frustrated Burned Out Pastor: "Well you certainly have my attention and as long as it isn't a multi-marketing scheme, I am very curious to hear what it is."

Faith Challenging Friend: "Have you ever considered Chaplaincy as a ministry option for your life?"

Frustrated Burned Out Pastor: "I have never even considered becoming a professional chaplain, but just you asking the question begins to make sense out of a lot of events and experiences in my life."

My wife: "I see chaplaincy as a perfect fit for you, your personality, and your ministry style."

His wife: "Paul, let me share with you that becoming a chaplain has been the best ministry career path I have taken. It all begins with Clinical Pastoral Education. . .

Here is some history describing the beginning of my ministry career. This coming Sunday Blue Springs First Church will celebrate their 35th church anniversary.

In 1970 two seminarian couples saw a vision for Blue Springs to have a church of the Nazarene. Blue Springs was just beginning to grow. The population at that time was approximately 6,000. (It is now estimated at 50,000.) Paul and Aleta Slater along with Bob and Marge Pulkinen began holding services in the basement of the Masonic Lodge Building on Main Street. They met on Sunday afternoons at 3:00pm to enable some of the members of Independence First Church to attend the services and support this new ministry.

Realizing that they needed to start having regular services if they were going to gain community support, they began having services on Sunday Morning, Sunday Evening and Wednesday Evening. Several families were led by the Lord to attend this new church and thus began a close knit congregation whose goal was for Blue Springs First Church of the Nazarene to touch the lives of the people in this community.

On November 29, 1970, Dr. Wilson Lampher, District Superintendent, organized the Blue Springs First Church of the Nazarene. The charter members were Paul and Aleta Slater, Marge and Bob Pulkinen, Bob and Sharon Henderson, Willard, Mabel and Donna Parker (Thompson).

The church grew and the Lord opened up an opportunity to purchase and existing church building. On March 16, 1972 the congregation no longer needed to meet in the basement of a Lodge Building but could worship in its own facility.

In 2004 the current facility on Walnut was purchased from a Methodist congregation. The vision for reaching the lost was renewed and the church began to grow."

Biblical Examples of Career Change

I am in the process of writing an article featuring Change Career Stories In Scripture

God's Word is full of Change Career stories. Examples abound throughout Scripture of servants of God whose career choice was interrupted by God's call to change careers.

1. Creator to Savior is quite a change in careers in anyone's book but is the primary message of God's Book.

2. Ephesians 3 describes the ultimate "change career with purpose" story, describing how Jesus, the Son of God, took on a servant role.

3. From Carpenter to Messiah was a career change Christ willingly made to fulfill His Father's redemptive purpose for His life.

My focus is to help those in ministry careers, especailly pastoral careers in local churches, see that God's call has within it a provision for change.

What Motivates My Internet Activities?
My purpose is to help people to be all they can be by the grace of God. Jesus said to "Go into all the world" as we impact our world with the message of God's love. For most of us our world is geographical. But the internet changes that. There are literally hundreds of millions of people who use the internet for all kinds of purposes -- some evil, some good. I decided to be one more voice for good.

I believe that the Apostle Paul, who was contantly using every device of communication in the first century to impact his world for Christ, would use the internet to do the same, were he alive today. Well he is not alive but I am, and so I choose to use what is available to me, with my limited budget and know how, to proclaim the message "God loves you" to my world.

My Website Writing Motivation

Now what is my internet content writing motivation that prompts this world changing web based writing?

The first is a motivation to make this a better world for Christ's sake. The internet is huge, with millions of prospective visitors I hope to enfluence to visit my site.

The second is a motivation to help hurting churches and frustrated pastors see ministry in a new light. With over 1500 pastors leaving ministry each week, I hope to help them reframe the concept "leaving ministry" to "expanding ministry".

The third motivation is a financial motivation to earn extra income to support my ministry habit. And someday I hope it is more than just enough to pay the utilities, as it is now. I look forward to the day when my internet ministry efforts are funded by the internet based income strategies I use.

A Wood Working Magazine That Can Prevent Career Burnout?

Greetings! Chaplain Paul here. I wrote the following article on wood working for several reasons.

First is that in our busy professional lives, many do not have a way to relieve stress in their lives.

Wood working as a hobby has been a tremendous stress remover for my brother-in-law, something he has done for years as a professional fire fighter. The same goes for my wife's cousin, an insurance broker who owns his own insurance company.

My son and I were talking about career advancement on the way to church services awhile back. I mentioned that some day I wanted to check out some Chistian home based business opportunities and to start my own business, a Christian home based business, and work for myself. To him, he could not see how that could be a career advancement in the chaplaincy field.

Somehow, in his mind and perhaps others think this too, a career means having a job in a given field, working for someone else. To me, a career could mean being that someone people work for. Lots of people work for themselves and the government even has a tax status designation for them -- self employed.

Seems like I need to do a bit of teaching about careers and career change in my own home! Here's some material I have taken off a webpage in which I ask a question and then offer career change advice.

As a healthcare chaplain, I interact with pastors and churches quite often. The reason I adapted this article on Church Websites is that many church webmasters simply don't understand that just having a website on the internet does not mean people visit that site.

I wrote the following to emphasize this point:

"So many churches and ministries have websites but no traffic! You have a message but no audience. Kind of like having your choir spend hours in preparing for a concert, spending loads of money to promote it, and then having a sparse crowd show up to listen."

I always look at the "We are hiring" links on the webpages I visit. Recently I came across a webpage that was entitled "Top 10 Reasons to Work for Our Company" and thought, "Wow! this company knows how to appeal to purpose driven job seekers".

I wonder what a list of "Top 10 Reasons to Work Where I work" would look like? What would you describe as the top employee benefits for working for your company or ministry?

Check out this list and ask yourself, would I want to work for this employee honoring company?

The Top 10 Reasons to Work For Us that this innovative purpose driven company lists for purpose driven job candidates:

They help people solve problems: With millions of visitors every month, our innovative purpose driven company has become an essential part of everyday life—like a good friend—connecting people with the information they need to live great lives.

They appeal to employees working to make a difference in our world: Being a part of something that matters and working on products in which you can believe is remarkably fulfilling.

They understand that appreciation is the best motivation: they have created a fun and inspiring workspace that purpose driven workers are glad to be a part of, including on-site doctor and dentist; massage and exercise; professional development opportunities; on-site day care; shoreline running trails; and plenty of snacks to get you through the day.

(My churches I worked for started with the "we love you" part, but they always put a period after "you".)

Even the best technology can be improved. We see endless opportunity to create even more relevant, more useful, and faster products for our users. Our innovative purpose driven company is the technology leader in organizing the world’s information."

They are open to anyone and everyone, no matter their past or looks: The people this innovative purpose driven company hires come from a wide array of backgrounds and they list "former neurosurgeons, CEOs, and U.S. puzzle champions to alligator wrestlers and former-Marines. No matter what their backgrounds innovative purpose driven company make for interesting cube mates." Hmmnnnn. I wonder if they need an workplace chaplain?

They are an international company, meeting their unique niche throughout the world. They state that they are "worldwide, Uniting the world, one user at a time. People in every country and every language use our products. As such we think, act, and work globally—just our little contribution to making the world a better place.

They appeal to purpose driven innovators by bragging that they "Boldly go where no one has gone before. There are hundreds of challenges yet to solve. Your creative ideas matter here and are worth exploring. You'll have the opportunity to develop innovative new products that millions of people will find useful."

They may be a large, international purpose driven organization, but they know how to create community: Their pitch to employees looking for an employer who makes people feel special is this: "There is such a thing as a free lunch after all. In fact we have them every day: healthy, yummy, and made with love."

Here's a website article I wrote to address having kids in the boomerang generation as well as having aging parents, thus putting us into the sandwich generation, I have entitled Financing house remodeling...house remodeling needs on our change career journey: "House Remodeling Plan"

The article has to do with the housing needs these generational labels refer to when it is adult children coming back home and aging parents needing to make a housing decision, at least so say their children.

There are many reasons people begin to think about house remodeling, but the reasons we have for home remodeling are mostly career change related.

I recently came across a study defining some of the reasons people find themselves planning an addition to their house?

* provide living space for a growing family
* update in anticipation of downsizing because the family is smaller
* enlarge the living space when the boomerang generation returns home, that is, adult children move back in
* create additional living space for aging parents moving in with a caregiving child
* the sandwich generation phenomena, where both a child returns AND one or both aging parents move in as well

For my wife and I, bone fide baby boomers, all of the reasons listed above are causing us to consider house remodel possibilities. But the question for us as for many is financial.

In spite of all the advertisements from Eloan regarding refinancing or Lendingtree about an Equity Line Of Credit, the financial capacity to repay for new financing or refinancing is mind boggling in a real estate market like San Diego's.

A career change for pastors may actually expand your ministry!

My decision to expand my career in ministry by becoming a healthcare chaplain was the best ministry career decision I ever made.

While I do have my own faith perspective, relating to the faith of those I serve is very fulfilling. Yesterday I was asked "Are you Lutheran?" I replied "I am today, explaining that it was the patient's faith that was important, not mine."

For those of you who read this blog "religiously", you know my heart's concern is for the many pastors who are from their perspective, leaving the ministry. The number is said to be over 1500 per week and is a concern for many. Personally, I have encouraged a reframing of the term "leaving ministry", saying instead "expanding ministry".

Reframe The Concept Of Leaving Ministry
My reasons for suggesting we reframe the concept of leaving ministry into expanding ministry is simple: usually that is exactly what happens -- for many pastors, more people are ministered to outside the local church than in it.

For example, I talked last week to a former pastor who, because his wife left him, had left his church assignment (probably asked to leave), and was now driving a tour coach (a sophisticated term for bus). I asked him if he ministered to more people as a coach driver or as parish pastor. Since he did not consider bus driving to be ministry, the question caught him off guard.

The more we explored the concept of ministry (literally "serving others in Christ's name" in Christian lingo), he had to agree that, as a tour coach driver, the number of people he encouraged, counseled, explored faith with, and just plain conversed with was many times over the number he reached as a parish pastor. What a joy to watch him open his eyes to the fact that he indeed was in a career with purpose.

But now, instead of having to convince a handful of people to come to his church so he could minister to them, they came to him by the hundreds each week. His whole perspective on leaving the ministry was changed to a concept of an expanded ministry.

I am sorry about his divorce and so is he. But the truth is that even a heartbreaking divorce experience, negative as it is, can be a contact point for conversation as he shares God's love with hurting people.

Well, I wrap up my vacation today. Hah! I may have called it a vacation, but like many of you, I took vacation days to attend a conference.

In my career as a health care chaplain, I attended a church conference, attending as a chaplain for the first time. We were asked as chaplains to cover the Nazarene Chaplaincy booth in the large exhibit hall.

What delightful time I had, especially talking to children and teens about becoming a chaplain. While the other chaplains talked to each other, I focused on those whose entire life was ahead of them.

I would ask "How old are you?"

"Thirteen."

"How would you like to be the smartest 13-year-old in the entire world when it comes to the topic of chaplaincy?"

They eagerly took a pamphlet defining what a career as a chaplain was all about.

We had meetings for chaplains as well as banquet especially for those who had chosen the career of chaplaincy. We then had breakout sessions for hospice chaplains, hospital chaplains, military chaplains, industrial chaplains, and firefighter and police chaplains.

I even interviewed several candidates for a hospice chaplain position we have at LightBridge Hospice, where I am the new director of spiritual care.

In my career as a hospice chaplain, my role now includes supervision of the spiritual care department. While we are still trying to define my title, either Lead Chaplain or Director of Spiritual Care, my duties are to define the spiritual care program and supervise the other chaplains employed by LightBridgeHospice.

While I would prefer to develop the goals of the department in light of our company's mission statement, what supervision means is to interview potential chaplain candidates to fill a chaplain's position. Because of the hospice company's growth, we have need for an additional chaplain immediately. So far I have interviewed 2 very qualified chaplains, both having the chaplaincy qualifications we are looking for.

Although we have a current chaplain job description, it was borrowed from several other hospice job descriptions and does not reflect the "LightBridge Way of Care" or the realities of the job. I will define the chaplain employment requirements and our hospice chaplain job expectations in the next few days.

One question that has emerged from our chaplain job searchers is this: Do you require Association of Professional Chaplain certification?" While I believe chaplain certification to be very valuable, at this time we will hire someone in process of certification, as explained at Chaplain Certification Process To Become A Professional Chaplain.

Having at least 1 and hopefully 2 units of Clinical Pastoral Education does give the pastoral care chaplain perspective on the role of chaplain, which I have found to be far different than ministry in a local parish. Each of our candidates has some Clinical Pastoral Education but not the 4 units of CPE that profession chaplain certification requires.

Of course, my new duties in my Spiritual Care Administrative job fits right in with what this blog is all about and gives me resources and content for my website Careers With Purpose.

What started me thinking about an asbestos mesothelioma legal claim?

My webpage on mesothelioma began as a blog right here at Blogger.com. I then developed it into a web page on my website.

That has been a strategy for website building that has been useful for me. Blogging allows me to float an idea that is on my mind, get it down on paper, or in the case of the internet, out on the web. For example, here are several other pages that began as blog intries:

When I blog, I write about what is happening at the moment, like when I had "shingles". The article starts out with the question I wondered what cause shingles? (or is it what causes shingles?)

I asked the question what cause shingles? or what causes shingles? Grammatical correctness aside, a deeper question "How will the diagnosis of shingles impact my life, my health, and my career?"

My blogging interests have been on hold because of our recent move. You can see how my other Blog at Change Career, With Purpose, News and Information has chronicled the month of May.

Moving and Career Change, with purpose, go hand in hand. For many, changing careers will mean moving to a new home. For many of you who choose to change careers, the whole process of relocation seems like a new career in itself. It may mean preparing a home for resell. Perhaps it will mean choosing to put your belongings into storage as you find temporary housing, such as moving in with relatives.

Whatever your moving circumstances, moving is hard work. My wife and I are bushed! And somehow for all the stuff you got rid of, there seems to be so much "unnecessary junk" that finds a way to move with you.

Throuhout my ministry career, I most enjoyed working for new, growing entities as opposed to an established one. Last week, our director at LightBridege Hospice here in San Diego asked if I would take on administrative duties in the area of spiritual care. As a young company 2 years old, we are ready to add another chaplain to our team of 3 chaplains.

I dug out the the job description I was given when I started less than a year ago. I wanted to compare what I am doing with what I was hired to do. Here is the chaplain's job description as it exists now:

RESPONSIBILITIES AND FUNCTIONS

Serves as a member of the Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) and attends meetings.
Completes spiritual assessment for patients admitted to LightBridge Hospice within four days of receiving referral from admitting RN Case Manager.
Works with staff, clergy and community groups to enhance their sensitivity to the spiritual concerns of patients/families experiencing terminal illness or loss.
Participates in patient conferences by exploring and assessing the potential spiritual needs of patients/families.
Maintain contact with community clergy regarding patients’ spiritual needs as needed.
Manages the provision of bereavement services in accordance with hospice policies and Federal and State regulatory requirements.
Maintains proper documentation of visits to patients/families.
Performs occasional liturgical assignments such as the annual Service of Remembrance and monthly memorial services with staff. Conducts or makes arrangements for funeral or memorial services when indicated.
Develops and maintains a resource group of clergy to whom specific aspects of spiritual care may be delegated.
Arranges for on-call availability of chaplaincy services.
Provide educational programs for hospice staff, community clergy, religious and lay representatives as appropriate.
Provides direct spiritual support and/or counsel to patients/families in keeping with patients’/families’ beliefs.
Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director

I will tweak it and make some changes as needed. Some changes will be in me -- how I do things, comforming to the expectations of the organization. But I will also change the job description to conform to reality. I believe a job description should be dynamic and changeable according to new assignments and expectations and to the personality of the employee.

Of course, this job description for chaplain will find it's way eventually to my website.

What does does peritoneal mesothelioma have to do with career change?

Why write about peritoneal mesothelioma on my website. It is on the the number one entry point to my website. I put a rather lengthy page up about peritoneal mesothelioma, which is probably way too long, but I did so for several reasons.

First of all, the topic is a high paying Adsense word, so I'm told. I am testing that idea here.

Second, the material on peritoneal mesothelioma comes from a government website with full public domain rights to reproduce. That means I can look smarter than I really am, using content for my website in areas I really am interested in and that will hopefully be material I can monetize.

How about remodeling your old house?

Then let me ask if you've ever heard of peritoneal mesothelioma? I bet you have, if you listen to the radio or watch TV. It is one of those advertisements we probably don't listen to unless we have peritoneal mesothelioma or know someone who does.

But there are enough catch words on the particular ad by some lawyer to capture my attention. Words such as asbestos, asbestos exposure, and remodeling and construction.

How does this relate to Change Career, With Purpose? Well for one thing, the legal profession must be making money, especially if someone in the legal field has made it their career to locate people with peritoneal mesothelioma.

My Exposure to Asbestos
I know I have been exposed to asbestos, as have you, if you attended school in an old building or attended worship services in an older church facility. Even the home we have been renting must have it because the landlord decided not to replace the tile flooring due to the risk of asbestos exposure!

When I was remodeling fixer-uppers, I know there was asbestos. One old house I remodeled in Bellingham, Washington had asbestos siding that I removed to put in a new window. (I tried to support "my home mission church career habit" by remodeling fixer-upppers in my real estate ventures.)

And then how many of us have scraped off a popcorn ceiling at one time or another in our remodeling moods? Most of us did not take the precautions we should have, but does that mean we are at risk?

Anyway, back to the radio ad about peritoneal mesothelioma. I did find some information about it even if I can't spell it without looking, let alone pronounce it right!

What is mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is a form of cancer affecting the abdominal cavity, chest cavity, and the region surrounding the heart. Due to its uncommon nature, mesothelioma is typically difficult to diagnose and treat. It has been connected with exposure to asbestos, a material formerly present in many work environments. Only about 3,000 individuals are diagnosed annually.

Individuals with a history of extended asbestos exposure are at the highest risk for developing malignant mesothelioma. Even a small exposure to this cancer-causing material can result in malignant mesothelioma. (Uh-oh.)

However, mesothelioma has a latency of up to thirty-forty years, and many individuals previously exposed to asbestos are now displaying symptoms. This means the average age of mesothelioma patients is between 50 and 70 years.

Men are typically affected more, due to the common presence of asbestos in industrial settings. There are three major types of malignant mesothelioma:

epithelial,
sarcomatoid,
and mixed.

Epithelial mesothelioma is most common. Symptoms may include, but are not limited to respiratory distress, a lasting cough, and pneumonia. In addition, symptoms are often mistaken for less serious ailments, and many patients do not show any signs at all.

Individuals with pleural mesothelioma may accumulate some fluid between the lung lining and chest cavity. This can be detected through a chest x-ray, as well as CT scans.

Diagnosis of Mesothelioma is based on a pathological exam, more commonly referred to as a biopsy. This exam will test a tissue sample for the presence of malignant and/or pleural mesothelioma.

Asbestos as the Primary Cause of Mesothelioma
Asbestos is a type of insulation material, which was used widely in the past in the following industries:

Construction industry
Ship building industry
Automotive industry
Other manufacturing industries

Mesothelioma occurred most often in persons who worked in the above industries and were exposed to asbestos in their workplace. The use of asbestos was very widespread after 1945.

However, first symptoms of mesothelioma may not become apparent 10-40 years after the initial exposure, which makes it very hard to diagnose. The peak in mesothelioma cases is expected to be reached around 2010 according to some studies.

The Asbestos Relationship to Peritoneal Mesothelioma?
There are three most commonly used types of asbestos: white, brown, and blue. Brown and blue asbestos are most commonly associated with mesothelioma. These types of asbestos have been banned by most countries in the 1990's.

Asbestos is a very dangerous substance and can cause a lot of damage to your health. It is made up of very small fibers, which can find their way to pleura (outside lining of the lung) and damage the cells pleura is made of.

These fibers can also be carried on clothing, which makes them dangerous not only to the person exposed to asbestos, but to their family members as well.

Note of Urgency Regarding Peritoneal Mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is a life-threatening disease and cannot be left untreated. The sooner it is diagnosed the better a patient's chances are of fighting this deadly cancer. Please contact a qualified physician immediately if you or someone you know has been diagnosed with mesothelioma.

The definition of financial triads provideed me with great financial content

Recently I became interested in "triads", of all things! The definition of "triads", I discovered, is simply three principles or topics, more or less connected, formed into one continuous subject.

I put a page on my website that focuses on financial triads, of all things. I do several things with the concept of financial triads.

Like I said, first of all, I give a definition of financial triads, saying:

Financial triads: three key financial principles more or less connected into one specific financial subject
Financial triads, taking three financial subjects or key financial principles, and putting them together, which I learned from my association with financial professionals,flow out of life and living.

On a practical side, I see financial triads becoming potential content for financial articles for this website and my Change Career With Purpose blog.

The dark side to Triads:
Now it was my association with financial professionals that prompted my new interest, financial triads. People whose careers would be in the financial sector, like the Realtor who sold us our new house in San Diego and the mortgage broker who is finding us a loan.

Now the concept of triads seems harmless enough to me. My wife told me there are musical triands and by daughter said there are triads in poetry. Yet in exploring the concept of triads, through a Google search, I also discovered a dark side to the concept. . .

I found that it refers to financial organizations that control the segments of economies in other countries, which we in America would equate to the financial underworld, like the Mafia. Hah! this gives the concept of association with financial professionals a whole new meaning! (So if I end up with a broken leg in a dark alley, you know what happened.)

The Practical Side of Financial Triads:
But let's get back to how I intend to use the term of financial triads, which is in the context of changing careers with purpose.

In formulating financial triads, I will place three key financial principles or fianancial subjects together that are more or less connected, into one financial topic. I must say "Exploring the ways I can launch articles or an ebook challenges me!"

I especially like the idea of these economic ideas just being "more or less" connected. I started thinking about all of the financial triads in my life, financial factors that are more or less connected.

Talk about potential website content or blogging subjects! Just think about all of the self published ebook possibilities there are, based on these economic triplets of truth.

I have just finished working on a new page on my website, http://www.change-career-with-purpose.com/self-ebook-publishing.html OK, so being finished with a website page is an overstatement.

Self ebook publishing, is not a new interest but one I have had for years. After talking with several people who have written books using traditional publishers, I would suggest you change your plans from writing a book to writing an ebook.

Here is how I began my focus on ebook publishing: "Self ebook publishing seems to be of interest to many. While you may think that this is just writer career information, think again. My hope is that it will not just lead you to writing a book but to writing an ebook!"

I continue: "You see, I am totally convinced that each one of us has a story to tell, and therefore, a book to write."

On my self ebook publishing page, I highlight those whom I identify as "Potential Ebook Self Publishers And Ebook Writers".

In identifying these potential ebook authors, I introduced them with this statement: "I am amazed at the number of people I have talked to recently who told me they had a book they are working on or knew someone with a 'half finished book' or a 'concept for a book'."

For example, take a look at these potential ebook self publishers and even the titles I've given the ebooks they write:

"Principals of Funding World Missions" My brother-in-law has loads of material about his career as a missionary to Bolivia.

"Staying Power When Others are Leaving the Ministry" A few days ago, my wife mentioned that a co-worker's husband has story upon story to share about ministry to the urban center, where he has pastored a small, inner city church for nearly 20 years.
"Life Lessons"We visited with my wife's aunt a few weeks back. She has written a small book sharing her life. She has paid far more than she should have to have it published using the traditional approach, even though it is a small book.

"Dynamic Principles of Early Childhood Learning" As my wife and had our Saturday morning breakfast we enjoyed one of those what's-going-on-in-your-life chats. She began to see all kinds of ebook possibilities from her years as a kindergarten teacher, musician, school administrator, and pastors wife.
"Overcoming Depression" Her personal history would be a powerful ebook of how to be an overcomer in the areas of anxiety, depression, childhood grief, and perfectionism.

I got so excited, I even registered the domain names self-ebook-publishing.com and selfebookpublishing.com . (Both are redirects back to my main website right now until I can develop my own sites with content. Not sure where this is leading but I am enjoying the journey!

A good information search with intelligent results starts with Google and THEN graduates to Search It!

After opening Search It!, I chose a search category geared to finding content for websites and blogs. The result of entering "change career 2000" took me to FindArticles. (I chose that particular year as it was the year I decided to pursue a professional chaplain career). I discovered that FindArticles is a massive repository... over 5 million articles from almost 1,000 publications.

They suggested:

Use FindArticles to find articles that have been written about keywords such as Career change, or about your site, or even about your competitors. It can stimulate great ideas for new content, and also keep you in tune with your competition and the "state of your area of expertise" on the Net. Here is the information that you requested about career change in FindArticles, starting with the year 2000.

From that one seach, 875 articles appeared, just from one source, FindArticles. Wow! 875 articles to prompt my imagination about career change! And that was from just one year, 2000 and from just one source!

What a great tool Search It! has become for my website building content as well as blogging content!

They've organized approximately 100 specific searches (Search Types) into 18 ecommerce-oriented Search Categories. Each category offers a specific menu of Search Types. The search results deliver brief tutorials about how to get the most out of each Search Type (except for certain "straight searches").

Bellingham Real Estate in Whatcom County My good friend Jon Soine wrote me the following note after checking out my website last week.

Greetings Paul,

IT was great to hear from you, and view your website.

AS a CRITIQUE, you have missed an opportunity that many pastors take, when they leave the ministry. They are often people orientated and seek out jobs that use these skills. ONE out of FIVE jobs in America is related to the REAL ESTATE community, banking, appraisal, construction, home repair, etc.

JUST In our office, the most noted former pastor is Steve Mason, who left a church with over 7,000 members in Bellingham. HE has been very successful, due to his great outreach, and good voice for radio and his radio spots, that people listen to daily. ALSO it allows one to set their own schedule and income needs to determine how hard they want to work.

Jon is right of course in highlighting Real Estate as a great area for employment for someone in ministry who wants to expand that ministry, the term I prefer to "leaving the ministry.

Jon tried his best to help me use real estate as a means to prepare for retirement. I still believe that for a poor person, real estate is about the only way to improve his or her net worth substantially, simply because of increased equity. Had I purchased a home in San Diego just 5 years ago, when I first arrived, I would have increased my net worth by hundreds of thousands of dollars. But, unfortunately, I always felt it was too expensive. Now I see how foolish that thinking is. Now my wife and I are searching for a house to buy, with entry level homes go for over $500,000!

We usually lived in a manse, or parsonage, in most of our 30 year of pastoring. The churches we served always said that they gave us housing, but that didn't mean the deed! One of the areas I would concentrate on if I were a young pastor, would be to purchase my own home! (Don't be noble here, someday you will be "Brother What's His Name, with someone else living in the parsonage, which is appreciating in value for the local church every year.

My challenge in keeping a home that I did finally purchase was when the board of my local church decided to sell the parsonage, since we were not living in it any more! That was just the point, they would keep the house, rent it, and that rent would help us buy our home. Great approach, except when they decided to sell the parsonage, since we were not living in it anymore. Huh? (Thus the source of my housing allowance was cut off.)

But I want to come back to the concept of leaving ministry. I contend that more ministry takes place beyond the pulpit than from it. I know Pastor Mason and my guess is that his real estate office is helping him fulfill all that God called him to do in ministry, sharing the message with folk that God loves them. If he is like me, he is probably seeing more results in ministry than when he was the pastor of a local church.

I wondered what cause shingles? (or is it what causes shingles?)

Yesterday I sent this email to my family:

Note how many of the family news items could have Career Change Implications! (I will mark with bold type those items I think classify for this).

Just an update from the San Diego remnant of the family:

My wife: really enjoying Pt.Loma Nazarene University in her job as director of Early Childhood Learning Center. She has had some health issues but no sign of cancer. Trying to get our daughter to get a job there as well. She is still working for Springs First Nazarene.

Our son: Seems to really be improving in so many areas. Diagnosis of bipolar now being questioned with the consensus of doctors who recently assessed him thinking his erratic behavior was a result of a reaction to medications. Of course, maybe his dog Sadie, whom we bought as a therapy dog for his high anxiety, is just that good! His settlement did come through for his spinal cord injury, but is was not very large.

Me: Really enjoying my role as hospice chaplain. I was to receive my certification as a Board Certified Chaplain at the Assoc. of Professional Chaplain's convention in Albuquerque early April. Can't go because I have shingles! Rashes on my forehead and scalp and right ear. I am learning to have greater empathy for those who suffer from chronic pain. Wow, does it hurt! And I'm taking pain meds! (My apologies to anyone who has had shingles because I thought it was just a bad rash! Sorry for your suffering.)

But I guess that just means I have new content for my website. I have really enjoyed producing Change Career With Purpose for several reasons:
First is that I see it as a ministry to the 1500 pastors said to be quitting ministry each week in America's Evangelical Churches.
Second, I needed a hobby and diversion after dealing with death and dying every work day.
Third, I wanted to see if people can actually have a web business and make money on the internet to show Darrell it can be done. (Let's just say that it is definately not get rich quick!)
And last, we can't afford to live in San Diego and need more income. (Notice that I am keeping my day job!)
But I have found it to be very fulfilling and hopefully useful in ministry to my corner of the ministry.

Article: Strike the Shepherd - Losing Pastors in the Church

In his article "Strike the Shepherd" Attorney Ken Sande asks that we "consider these sobering statistics:

23 percent of all current pastors in the United States have been fired or forced to resign in the past.
45 percent of the pastors who were fired in one denomination left the ministry altogether.
34 percent of all pastors presently serve congregations that forced their previous pastor to resign.
The average pastoral career lasts only fourteen years—less than half of what
it was not long ago.
25 percent of the churches in one survey reported conflict in the previous five years that was serious enough to have a lasting impact on congregational life.
1,500 pastors leave their assignments every month in the United States because of conflict, burnout, or moral failure.

"Peacemaker Ministries trains and assists Christian adults and children to resolve personal, church, business, and legal conflict through biblical peacemaking, negotiation, forgiveness, reconciliation, mediation, and arbitration."

It is that last statistic that I have seen again and again but could not substantiate. (These statistics come from studies done in the late 1990's by the Barna Group, Focus on the Family, and Leadership Magazine plus others.)

An Austalian study by Rowland Croucher of 243 pastors who had left the ministry wrote in his article "Why Pastors Leave Parishes"

"About 20% of ex-pastors in parish settlements left to move into another career, (either within their denomination, a para-church organisation or a secular position). One-quarter of these have done so without hurt, conflict, loss of health, or plain boredom, being their underlying motivation. The few can say, 'I had enjoyed a total of 15 years of parish ministry and I felt ready for a new challenge in ministry', or saw the move into another area of ministry as the natural next step because of the gifts and the expertise that they possessed."

Perhaps it is time to embrace this type of thinking, reframing the concept of leaving the ministry to a concept of expanding the ministry. That is what I attempt to do on my website Change Career With Purpose. Could it be that this is a time to embrace a new paradyme for the church, or better said, return to a Biblical paradyme.

Perhaps this is a new opportunity to define how many churches determine God's call to pastoring and/or church ministry, alligning God called ministry to the New Testament model.

On one of Focus on the Familiy's websites, Parsonage.org - Changing Careers , Dan Davidson writes "There is one question that pastors do not like to talk about much. In fact, some don't believe it is even theologically valid to ask it. Should I change careers? It is true that God calls many people into pastoral ministry for the remainder of their lives. However, it is also true that God calls many people into pastoral ministry for a while."

This is a great article and I also speak to the issue of pastors leaving ministy on my website Change Career With Purpose, (which in itself is a new ministry career for me).

Mr. Davidson (or is it Rev. Davidson or Pastor Davidson -- this reveals another challenge for those who change ministry careers: how do people address you) continues his article by saying:

"I've found that this issue of changing careers is usually one of the hardest we ever have to deal with as pastors. There is something mystical about a call to ministry, something divinely satisfying and fulfilling, something humanly grand and prestigious, something proud. It is very difficult to 'leave' that behind."

That is why I feel we need to reframe our concept of "pastors leaving ministry" ... God is often expanding our ministry (for an example, see career change for pastors ).

Pastor Davidson reveals one of most crucial aspects of a pastor "expanding" his or her ministry this way:

"In fact, such a decision is usually accompanied by a sense of shame and deep failure by the pastor and one of disappointment by family and friends. But that should not be. There is no shame in heeding God's call to a new type of ministry or a new obedience in some other field. In fact, conversely, there should be shame associated with ignoring such a call. There is danger in someone remaining in pastoral ministry after God has called him elsewhere."

Yes! Rev. Davidson (or is it Dr. Davidson?) One of the reasons for this shame is trying to see Apostle Paul' ministry career from the perspective of our 21st century situation. It seems to me he had so much more freedom in responding to God's next assignment. He usually knew it was time to leave because he would wake up, only to find his body hurt like crazy. He would then notice there were stones all around him. Then he would notice he was bloody. At that point, he would make this career change decision: "I think I'll go on to the next town!" He didn't even wait for God's specific assignment in most of his ministry decisions! (I count only 4 times God "spoke" to Paul as to his next ministry assignment.)

What do you blog about when you are all blogged out?

One of the answers to this question was that you blog about what your have blogged about before! And so, here I am, kind of at a loss for blog words, yet committed to blogging several times a week.

Of course, one of the reasons I may be blogged out is because of energy I have been putting into my website (http://www.change-career-with-purpose.com) . I have found great satisfaction in having my own website but it is more than just a way to increase my income, which it is. It has become my legacy, my expression of ministry, a way to express my faith.

For example, on my website blog I wrote this on January 22, 2005 09:22: The Positive Benefits of Faith For Your Career Change Journey

As I think about the reasons prompting career change thoughts, I appreciate my faith and its impact on how I face life. I intend to develop this concept more on my website, but for now, here is the direction of my thinking:

Positive Faith Benefit #1: My faith gives me a unique perspective on life and death.

Positive Faith Benefit #2: My faith frees me from the regrets of the past and empowers me to embrace the future.

Positive Faith Benefit #3: My faith propels me to understand God's purpose for my life and to make my choices from that perspective.

Positive Faith Benefit #4: My faith helps me define the priorities of relationships and to put people first.

Positive Faith Benefit #5: My faith helps me balance my life and work and to understand my life so much more than work! (I was trying to say "life is much more than work").

As I check to see where people come from who view my website, I see countries like Chile, Norway, Singapore (Is that a city or country?). Jesus said to "go into the uttermost parts of the earth" to share the good news of the gospel, that is, the positive benefits of faith.

Part 2 On "Developing A Good Search Strategy"

My take on personal finances is rather simplistic-- either you are a consumer or a provider in any one financial transaction. Most of us are satisfied to be consumers, the ones paying the money.

Yet if you have a job, you are a provider -- a provider of "you". You are the product that your employer pays for.

Once I saw how this consumer-provider thing works, I realized I wanted to become more of a provider, you know, the ones receiving the money! Since you have to be on one side or the other, I decided to explore how I could be a provider. What could I provide? Information for one. How? Well, the best way is through the internet. Since I needed information in order to provide information, I used the search strategies on this site myself. And then I wrote this page. Here is the second information search strategy I share:

I wrote the referred to article for my website in order to create 2 income streams in my website ministry/business.

The first income stream is Google search itself, to take advantage of their Google Adsense Program. The truth is that I would have chosen Google as my search engine of choice simple because over the years they have proven to be the one that trully did give me the best information search with intelligent results.

So, choosing my keywords carefully, probably too carefully, for all the time it took me, I wrote the following:

To perform a practical and profitable information search with intelligent results, begin with Google. Of course, you will then need to decipher the google information page result your search produces.

As a good starting point, your goal in this search exercise is to do a practical company search for information that will enable you to effectively change your career with purpose or to help you develop a profitable home based business enterprise.

Your search engine strategy should yield answers because you need a good information search with intelligent and practical results. Answers to questions such as:

1. How do you produce a google information page with a useful result from
your search activity?

2. Is it possible to do a company search and find information useful to changing your career or beginning a Christian home based business?

To perform an information search for intelligent results, begin with Google. Afterward you will need to decipher the google information page result from your search so that you can analyze discoveries from your company search and use the information to develop strategy for your Change-Career-With-Purpose journey.

Consider animal lovers careers, animal nutrition career, animal training careers:

This is a new page I have put on my website. It addresses one key reason I started my Website Business -- concern for my adult children and their careers. I asked my son Darrell if I could share his story on the website as a way to help others who also suffer from extreme pain as well as severe depression.

As we talked on the way to church services, I praised God for helping him get to where he is now. Later we took communion together and I thanked God for answering one of my most spoken prayer requests, that my son would also be my brother!

On my website, I explain why I see animal lovers careers as a good fit for Darrell as he re-enters the work force:

He loves animals! Seems obvious that if you are considering animal lovers careers, you love animals. I see animal lovers careers as a good fit because he has always enjoyed pets, especially Sadie, his yellow lab;

He understands the need for healthy eating for animals: his committment to feeding Sadie foods designed for her size and age indecates that an animal nutrition career would fit into this approach to Sadie's petfood diet. Besides, Sadie loves to eat and she could help him pay for all that better quality dog food she devours;

He has taught Sadie to be obedient to his voice commands and sometimes she even considers the possibility of doing so! OK, I want him to consider animal training careers because Sadie desperately needs to be trained in dog obedience herself;

and finally, there seems to be no shortage of pets. That means careers in the animal field offer viable petcare career opportunities that will continue to grow.

Sadie Is A Four Legged Pet Therapist
Darrell has been helped greatly by Sadie, his four legged therapist, an extremely intelligent Yellow Labrador Retriever.

I have written about Sadie before and have promised her a web page of her own so she can earn money to support her eating habit.

Sadie is now a year old and has worked full time to help Darrell improve his mental outlook after his spinal cord surgery. Her job is basically to get him up and to get him out.

Her favorite activity is to take a walk. Just mention the word "walk" and she gets excited! (As we watch college basketball games, she really gets excited as we yell to the referee "He walked!") Thus she gets exercise and he gets exercise.

Sadie Loves Careers In The Animal Field
I have an idea that Sadie, his Yellow Labrador Retriever, could be the key to a new career for Darrell.

As a therapy dog, Sadie would love to see her master choose any of the many animal lovers careers, but her first choice for him would be an animal nutrition career. She thinks it would give new meaning to her being a lab dog.

She is not too keen on animal training careers, leaning more toward animal care careers that would promote her own comfort.

While I love helping others in their change career journey, it is my own children who top the list of people I most desire to provide career change advice.

In this case, Sadie too, wants her master to consider animal lovers careers, especially an animal nutrition career. She added this comment: "After all, a Dog Has Got To Eat!"

She went on: "And if he has to, even animal training careers wouldn't be too bad of a choice. I do love those deliscious doggie treats he rewards me with when I accidentally obey his commands."

What Writers Need to Know About Making Money

Building a website based on good content has been a challenging and stretching process for me. I have discovered so much as I have attempted to startup an internet business that is also a ministry.

First of all is that it is very easy to become unbalanced in one's life because the neeed to complete the uncompleted begs for attention! That is one reason I began walking with my wife, to bring balance into my life regarding relationship, communication, and life outside a computer.

Second of all, everything in life becomes a possible website entry or blog topic. Writing has become an enjoyable activity in my life. I even see the possibility of a book or two.

Thirdly, typos can exist and be obvious to everyone else in the wurld (see what I mean?) but not to the writer. Spell checkers don't help if it is a legitimate word but used incorrectly.

So, I am told, there appears on "won" of the following pages the word "tow" instead of "two". Someday I will find it and correct it.

I do and you do, if we are of the Christian faith. It is the individual* and his or her faith in Christ that makes a business Christian.

My product is me just as you are the product of your Christian business endeavor.

Change Career, With Purpose,
News and Information

I am relatively new to blogging but see it as a tremendous resource in my life. The link above is to my other blog, one that is on my new website. A good question to ask is "Why did I start blogging?"

1. I heard that it would increase my website's ranking. A rather practical answer, but it is the truth.

2. Now that I am into it, I blog because it is a way to write. I use to write volumes compared to what I do now, so this is an outlet for my creative side.

3. I also blog as way to release tension. As a hospice chaplain, I deal with death and dying constantly. Writing this blog is a great outlet for me.

4. My blogging is a way to share what I am passionate about -- my faith, my website, my relationships, my work.

5. Blogging is a way for me to journal. Seems like it would be easy to do this, but getting a blog written 3 times a week has been challenging and stretching. I need that to force my hand to express myself.

Time to get to bed!

Using The Keyword Careers
Find Career Site Information:

Recently I made changes on my website home page in an attempt to increase traffic. Several of my pages were in a number 1 position on Google, but not my home page. I did a search of better keywords I could use to see if I could improve page rank. (If all of this is unfamiliar to you, check out Increasing Website Traffic. )

I changed my main key word from a word that had had 160,000 searches but over 43,000 sites meeting the demand. So I chose several new keywords, that, though were only searched for a few hundred times, had only a handful of sites meeting the demand.

So my new headline became "The Keyword Careers Leads to Career Site Information & Career Change Advice". I then sprinkled those keywords throughout my home page to see if I move up from a site burried deep in a Google search up to the top 5. Who knows, maybe I will even land another #1 position!

My wife thinks I've enjoyed building my first personal website because I veiw it as a competive sport! She may be right. There is a thrill in watching your page rank move from over 2,000,000 to 243,000. Many people have done much better. But I am satisfied with the score and will continue to add content to see even more traffic arrive at my site.

My Website Business Venture

On January 9, 2005 I wrote an article entitled "Are You Thinking "Change Career" Thoughts?" on another Change Career Blog.

At that time I aske this question: "Why did I create this blog and website?"
My answer? "Primarily I created this internet ministry website because people in my world were sharing their career frustrations with me."

I mentioned that most concerning to me was my own family members struggling with what career to choose. Especially my own-young-adult children (and nieces and nephews) who are uncertain what to do in life.

So my daughter figured she would test my change career coaching abilities. "Dad, this has to be there by Monday and I don't have everything ready yet!" So I stayed up til 3:30 a.m. trying to figure out Adobe Acrobat in order to paste her answers into the PDF application form.

Of course, had I not watched the Superbowl game, I would have been done at a decent time. But the application has been turned in on time and, though tired, I am excited about what this site can become.

More that just a website about changing careers becasue they are a dime a dozen. But a site that addresses inner fears when considering a change in career. One that prompts you to determine purpose first and and then employment.

In my origional article I stated: "Day in and day out, as a health care chaplain, I hear (and overhear) people voicing career frustrations." Take for example the following:

I recently attended a funeral where the new widower said to me "My mother-in-law is thinking about becoming a chaplain. What's the process?"

The next day at following worship services at the church I attend, a fellow who works for a large computer conglomerate mentioned that his company was warning career employees that the labor market pool in other countries was making it difficult not to fire $75,000 workers and hire $10,000 workers.

Perhaps you too are thinking about your future and your change career options.

I recently joined Linkshare Affiliate Program in order to create an income stream from my website. I finally had my site listed in google as well as several other search engines so want to begin using my website as a funding source for my ministry. A career change for pastors may actually expand your ministry!

Ministry and pastoral burnout is a reality I wanted to speak to when I began developing my website.

I have heard that over 1,000 pastors in the US are quitting each week.

I have cause for concern it they are literally giving up on ministry. But what if what is often referred to as "quitting the ministry" is just a change of focus of ministry or a change in the setting of ministry?

I was a Faith Coordinator for the County of San Diego (North Central Region) when we had the Billy Graham Mission last year. One of the discoveries made was that 80% of our county's 3 million people did not attend church. In other words, to minister within the confines of local churches is very limiting to one's ministry!

That is one of the purposes of my website! Helping those who are discouraged in ministry, perhaps to the point of pastoral burnout, to consider how to expand ministry. What some call "leaving the ministry" is actually going to where the people are!

One way I am doing so is through my website ministry/business. I have found that a ministry website that also earns income is a way to infuse new energy and passion into my ministry. Yes, there are many ministry careers that are outside what is considered a typical church career.

That is the purpose of this blog as well -- to share how a career change for pastors is a way to expand ministry, which is far different than leaving ministry.

My challenge to is to reframe the concept of leaving the ministry into expanding the ministry! In fact, a career change for pastors may lead you to the most fulfilling ministry you have ever experienced!

Reasons for changing careers become positive career change motivators:

On this particular page of my website I call attention to what is prompting our thoughts to change careers.

Understand 'Why' you are considering a career change. Reasons prompting career change thoughts are as diverse and unique as we are as individuals. Yet, some common career change themes do appear again and again.

Reframe your career change problems into career change motivators!
The change really begins in how we perceive ourselves and the events in our lives. What I thought was a negative situation I later viewed as a positive in that I was forced to move (or move on).

1. Economic concerns: to me this was more than just needing extra funds. . .I am thinking of the bigger financial picture. Stuff like poor earning capacity, retirement planning or lack of retirement planning in my case!. . . being stuck in a low paying job, and having the proverbial financial rug pulled out from under my feet!

2. Financial needs: needing funds for college, overwhelming medical bills, , or lack of a retirement plan all have been the story of my life. Nothing prompts career change thinking like financial pressure! All of these money deficiencies entered into prompting me to change my career. The truth be known, personal finance problems have been the motivation for most career changes.

3. Spiritual factors: to name this website career-change-with- purpose.com should be a clue that there was more to my career change decision than personal finance problems. For me, God's purpose, the will of God, and discovering God-given dreams entered into my creativity in facing the future. I was purpose-driven in changing my career -- I wanted to empower others to be all that God wants them to be. I find this to be true for many who are considering a new career.

4. Family Life cycle factors: for many, a midlife career change moves them into a completely new area of life fulfillment. I'll own up to the fact that my mid life career change resulted from a desire to explore career opportunities beyond what I was doing. Others I have known change careers after getting married or beginning a family. I have friends who made a career change following a divorce or the death of their spouse.

5. Emotional factors: burnout, discouragement, workplace frustrations, and boredom with a present career can prompt a search for employment options. But if result is career fulfillment and joy with your job, even these negative emotional factors will prompt you to praise God for them.

6. Entrepreneurial Drive: not everyone is a 9 to 5 type of person. Perhaps you, like me, have been described as someone who "draws outside the lines". To be honest, I was always strategizing ways to make more money, increase income, or somehow produce extra income. Ultimately this drive was to raise funds for ministry. I still feel that there must be creative ways to raise funding for purpose-driven endeavors.

Dynamics Of The Dream

Concepts associated with the dynamics of successful dreaming ... taking a vision and structuring it so that it comes to fruition in spite of the dreamer's humble circumstances.

Summarized in three phrases the concepts would be:

1. Vision attracts resources.

2. Sacrifice inspires others to participate.

3. Perseverance gives God time to work the miracles. (Every true dreamer knows the realities of the "death of the dream". It takes a miracle for it to happen ... to resurrect the dream.)

Pastor Lorenzo Quintero accepted the pastorate there with a small "temple" made of adobe bricks. The plaster was cracked off exposing most of the bricks to the weather. The roof was of corrugated iron ... well rusted and full of holes.

While the congregation was very limited, the potential congregation was awesome as the surrounding area was planted to olive trees, fields of broccoli, tomatoes, etc. Literally hundreds of migrant workers from all over Mexico were living in shelters made of blue plastic tarps strung on poles and tied to the olive trees.

While these workers were poor and often tired, they were open to his ministry. In fact they were open to multiplying his ministry, as after harvest, they returned to their homes across Mexico, carrying that message of transforming love.

Circumscribed by his limited facilities, he dreamed the dream of something significant ... even though they hardly had funds for tortillas and frijoles ... and nothing to fix the roof.

In the city of Enseñada is a very significant church building belonging to the Church of the Nazarene. In fact it appears as a landmark on the tourist maps one gets when one purchases car insurance at the border.

The exterior is made of unique tan colored cement blocks that have a faceted face. The roof is made of Styrofoam sandwiched between sheets of enameled aluminum.

On a scorching hot day, inside it's nice. On a cold day ... inside its nice. Either way, the insulated construction keeps it comfortable without heat or air conditioning.

Pastor Quintero knew that without a plan ... he had no project. So he contacted an architect who I suspect was "hungry". He asked the architect if he could reduce the scale of the Enseñada facility to fit his lot in Maneadero.

When he was assured that it could be done, he confessed to the architect that he had no funding ... and that without a plan, he had no project.

So the architect agreed to do the drawings on the promise that as construction funds became available, he would get a percentage to be compensated for his work.

One day Pastor Quintero got out there with a bucket of white lime, a long string, some stakes and a pick and shovel. He laid out the lines for the new foundation and began to dig the trench ... It encompassed the old building.

People from the congregation came and asked him, "¿Qué estas haciendo?" (What are you doing?)

"Estoy cavando para los cimientos del nuevo templo." (I am digging the footings for the new temple.)

They exclaimed, "Oh! Are there funds available for the construction?" (They are about to learn secrets to funding world missions, ideas for raising world mission support, and creative church fund raising.)

His response was, "No, but there is another pick and shovel if you want to help."

One afternoon as he was out there digging, a small caravan of RVs came down Hiway #1 headed for Cabo San Lucas. They were driven by retirees from the Santa Ana Church of the Nazarene.

As they made the sharp bend in the road and came up the steep incline, they noticed the activity as well as the logo on the church sign, so they stopped to rest and chat a moment.

They knew a few words in Spanish and Lorenzo had studied at the Spanish Seminary in San Antonio, Texas, so he knew some street English. He communicated, "Wait a moment," and ran inside for the plans.

(Another opportunity to teach principals of funding world missions, ideas for raising world mission support, and creative church fund raising.)

Now we all know that for some people, plans are a bunch of lines on a big paper ... and generates a "Ho-hum." Others, seeing those same lines ... experience a "Wow!" down in their hearts.

As they traveled on south, the Lord began to deal with their hearts and after discussing it among themselves, on the way back they made a deal with Pastor Quintero to bring a team down and help pour the foundation. (Thus vision attracts resources ... and sacrifice inspires others to participate.)

Career Health Care Job Opportunities Will Increase

As I write this tonight, I hear crying in the background. Not loud sobbing, mind you, more of an occasional whimper. It's Sadie, my son's nine month old yellow labrador retriever. You see, today we had her spayed. (Why didn't someone tell me that the more they weigh, the higher the cost.)

Nonetheless, Sadie isn't her usual chipper self. She just kind of wanders from room to room, whimpering as she tries to find comfort. She won't lay down, so she just leans against the sofa or the recliner. She is one miserable dog.

While at Petco, just before picking her up at the vets, I saw a sign about some open job positions their store had. I mentioned one to my unemployed son, advertising pet obedience trainer. I know he loves animals, so I was trying to be supportive without being parental. You see, my son is just now getting back on his feet after spinal cord surgery. He just doesn't know the direction he wants to take in life.

His response: "What do I know about pet obedience to be a trainer?". Maybe as he things about it, the creative juices will begin to fomulate a plan. His own dog is actually a Therapy Dog in need of training. A good place to begin.

One of the reasons I began my own home business was to show him it can be done. He is curious but can't figure out how an affiliate marketing company can make money. At this point, while I am still waiting for the search engines to find my website, I am trying to figure it out too.

The good news is that Google finally found me and listed all my pages. And I continue to write content about anything and everything, like our dog Sadie getting spayed.

Education and learning may come from unique & surprising education alternatives:

Maybe it was because the University of Connecticut men's basketball was on TV today that caused me to think about my Grandmother Slater. (I know, they lost!) Here is a bit of information about her that I recently learned.

A Passion for Education has been in my family's blood for generations. My grandmother (my father's mother) set the stage for future generations, being a college graduate in 1899!

Regarding his mother, my father observed in a letter to my son, his grandson: "She was the oldest daughter of a family of ten children. Graduating from Storrs College (now the main campus of The University of Connecticut) in 1899 she went on to teach school in East Glastonbury where she taught for several years".

100 years after she graduated from college, the internet has exploded the education alternatives available. These educational options, such as online learning, and distance learning, make an online education readily available to her great-great grandchildren!

The pursuit for education and learning has been true for my generation, but ours is not the only generation to place great emphasis upon education. Thanks Grandma, for leading the way!

Why are you thinking change career thoughts?

Recently I launced my own website, a combination internet ministry and business. On it I share my reasons for starting my own Christian home based business but briefly let me share just what it was that promped my new endeavor.

Why did I create this website? Primarily I created this internet ministry website because people in my world were sharing their career frustrations with me. Maybe you identify with some of the following:

--A discouraged pastor who wonders if he should leave the pastorate, perhaps to become a chaplain like I have done, or make an entirely different career choice.

Of course, as those who change careers discover, we usually do not leave ministry, we expand it! Look how one pastor expanded his ministry.

--Then there are my "forced out military friends", both with seventeen years under their belt. But now they have received their ultimate marching: "Forward, Move!".

They join so many as the military downsizes who are uncertain about career options in the public sector. Both are seeking midlife career change planning ideas and have asked for career coaching counsel.

One forced out military friend is a navy chaplain. Unfortunately, his chaplaincy training did not include CPE in a certified training center that provided clinical pastoral education.

Most likely he will not find a job as a health care chaplain until he takes this specialized training. Doing so will provide exciting ministry employment as a health care chaplain.

--Most concerning to me are my own family members struggling with what career to choose. My own-young-adult children (and nieces and nephews) who are uncertain what to do in life.

They are seeking career information and ideas on how to choose a career. These are college graduates who feel stuck in their career. Perhaps they should consider a social worker career.

--My wife is an example of an educator who made a teaching career change but did so by staying in the education profession. I plan on writing her "career change for teachers" story. (OK, I thought I already wrote that page, but when I tried to link to it, I got that dreaded message "No such page"! Back to the website

Best Advice for My Chaplain Career

May your chaplain job search lead to finding chaplain jobs and a chaplain career

I was frustrated, to say the least. My clearance had still not come through after 20 weeks! I was told it was because of 9/11 (this incident took place 4 months after the Twin Towers were attacked). The truth was that my application had slid under an administrator's computer, but this story is about how God even uses human failures for our good.

I was doing my clinical training for chaplaincy (CPE or Clinical Pastoral Education in Association of Professional Chaplain lingo). I was to serve at the County of San Diego's Polinsky Children's Center, an emergency shelter for abused and molested children.

Since I couldn't be with the children until clearance came through, I attended all kinds of training sessions. It was at one of these training sessions that I received the best advice I ever had to help me define my pastoral approach to people.

Early on as I attended a training session, the clinician teaching the class sat with me during a break. As we got acquainted over coffee and doughnuts, I asked him his concept of what a chaplain’s role was in a setting like ours—abused, neglected children who had experienced trauma and pain beyond imagination.

His answer has defined my ministry approach to these children for whom our site is now their home. His ministry plan was very simple—"be visible and available". Let them know I am there for them and then show them I am available to them.

After my clearance application was retrieved from under the administrator's computer, my clearance came through in a few days.

I followed his advice and so my ministry approach was to take “pastoral strolls” through the 10 acre campus, going cottage to cottage, walking through the medical clinic, going to the gym, eating in the cafeteria, and thereby making myself visible to the children.

The clinician mentioned that at first it would seem not much was happening but that if I continued to do this, soon the children would recognize me, greet me, and even ask for spiritual help.

At first it was just the staff that responded to me but more and more children were greeting me by name. Staff too engaged me in conversation on my strolls through the campus and I had opportunity to relate pastorally to several of them. In the months that followed, just by being "visible and available", I began to have one-on-one contact with children as well as many referrals from staff asking me to meet with specific children.

By using this simple ministry approach, shared with me at a training course I would not have been at except for human failure and governmental red tape, I received the best advice for my chaplain career that still defines my ministry approach.

I have always enjoyed the stories of success that people with an entrepreneurial spirit have shared with me over the years. I remember somewhere in the past reading the key regrets of some octenarians (folk 80 years +) as they reflected on their past.

First was that they wished they would have concentrated more on relationships!

Second was that they regretted not taking better care of themselves now that they were over 80!

Third is that they wished they would have taken more risks! (You ever hear those "woulda-coulda-shoulda" stories. I've got a few to share from my own journey.)

Change Career With Purpose. . . Purposeful Career Planning

As a hospice chaplain, this is the type of patient that is a privilege to minister to in their end-of-life journey. Many do not display such an attitude, perhaps due to pain, or frustration with their disease.
I am there for them too. But it is this kind of lady who blesses me as I attempt to bring light and joy to suffering people. I do not know the source of this piece but hope my sharing it will bring hope to those of you who read it.

She is 92 years old, petite, well poised, and proud. She is fully dressed each morning by eight o'clock, with her hair fashionably coifed, and her makeup perfectly applied, in spite of the fact
she is legally blind.

Today she has moved to a nursing home. Her husband of 70 years recently passed away, making this move necessary.

After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, where I am employed, she smiled sweetly when told her room was ready. As she maneuvered her walker to the elevator, I provided a visual
description of her tiny room, including the eyelet curtains that had been hung on her window.

"I love it," she stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having just been presented with a new puppy.

"Mrs. Jones, you haven't seen the room...Just wait," I said.

Then she spoke these words that I will never forget:

"That does not have anything to do with it," she gently replied. "Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not, does not depend on how the furniture is arranged. It is how I arrange my mind. I have already decided to love it."

It is a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice. I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or I can get out of bed and be
thankful for the ones that do work. Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open, I will focus on the new day and all of the happy memories I have stored away...just for this time in my life.
